The Church on the Water by Tadao Ando

Designed in 1985 and built in 1988, the Church on Water is one of the Catholic churches designed in Japan by the Pritzer Prize-winning Japanese architect Tadao Ando. It is considered one of his most successful works, in which he uses, as usual in him, nature as an element involved in the design.

Located near Tomamun, in the heart of the island of Hokkaido in northern Japan, the Church on the Water is actually a small chapel belonging to the Alpha Resort hotel. In it, Tadao Ando visually fuses elements from nature with the interior of the building that houses the chapel.

Within this relationship, water plays a fundamental role. The church consists of two cubes made of concrete and glass, maintaining at all times the purity of lines and materials.
