Hispanic-Mozarabic Liturgical Trousseau

Featured Works: Spain

Chasuble, chalice veil, burse for corporal, and chalice pall

Raw silk with embroidery

Spain

This chasuble together with its complementing liturgical adjuncts was commissioned for a priestly ordination. The request was for a special design that followed the style of the liturgical vestments of the Hispanic-Mozarabic rite. Accordingly, the cut of the chasuble is conical in shape, its vertical dimension being longer than that of the chasubles of the Roman rite. Decorative motif, suggested by the client, reproduces intertwining ornamentation which is a distinctive element of the Hispano-Mozarabic medieval miniatures. Hispano-Mozarabic liturgy was developed in the Andalusian territory of Spain, with its own characteristics, setting it apart from Roman liturgy. Hispanic-Mozarabic liturgy continues to be used since at least the 8th century.
