Wood carving of the Holy Family in group arrangement used frequently since at least the 16th century. The idealized realistic style figures express solemnity and expressiveness. The bond between St. Joseph and the Child is highlighted through the paternal gesture with which Joseph protects the boy with his arm. The Child returns the caress, while the Virgin Mary observes this and joins her hands, as if in prayer. The Christ-Child holds a bread roll close to his chest, a premonition of the Eucharistic sacrifice.
