{"id":16823,"date":"2022-04-13T09:13:00","date_gmt":"2022-04-13T09:13:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/granda.com\/?p=16823"},"modified":"2023-10-27T22:45:09","modified_gmt":"2023-10-27T20:45:09","slug":"neo-romanesque-goldsmithing-a-monstrance-for-an-abbey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/granda.com\/en\/orfebreria-neorromanica-una-custodia-para-una-abadia\/","title":{"rendered":"Neo-Romanesque goldsmithing: a monstrance for an abbey"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Mostense abbey of <a href=\"https:\/\/stmichaelsabbey.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/stmichaelsabbey.com\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Saint Michel<\/a> in Silverado (California, USA), of the Norbertine Fathers, is a neo-Romanesque style building, for which we carried out two exceptional works of art last year. <a href=\"https:\/\/granda.com\/en\/goldsmiths\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/granda.com\/orfebreria\/\">goldsmithing<\/a>. It was a tabernacle inspired by the altarpiece of Aralar and a votive lamp based on the crown of Recesvinto, two of the most outstanding pieces of Hispanic medieval goldsmithing. A set coherent with the aesthetics of the temple, to which this neo-Romanesque monstrance has now been added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The challenge, on this occasion, was to create a piece in keeping with a style, the Romanesque, for which there are no historical references, since the monstrance was a liturgical object that was introduced later. We opted for a large-format sun monstrance, ornamented with opaque enamels in which blues predominate, as was the case in the medieval enamels of Limoges. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sun is ornamented with a border that refers to filigree work. This technique was widely used in the <a href=\"https:\/\/shop.granda.com\/es\/12-orfebreria\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/shop.granda.com\/es\/12-orfebreria\">goldsmithing<\/a> It is present in the famous chalice of Saint R\u00e9mi (Reims Cathedral), along with the borders and small cabochons, from which the base of our monstrance is inspired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The monstrance is designed to facilitate the blessing, for which the upper part of the stem that holds the virile can be removed.
