Burgos recovers the tradition of the "Descent from the Cross" thanks to the replica of the Holy Christ made by GRANDA

The replica of the Holy Christ of Burgos is already in the Cathedral. It is an articulated image, made of wood but filled with synthetic fibers and covered with leather, with natural nails and hair. To make the copy, commissioned to Granda, the restorers have studied the original piece, analyzing its materials through X-rays and clinical analysis of the polychromy.

The uniqueness of this replica, as explained by Francisca Soto, Director of the Restoration Department of Granda, lies in the fact that it aims to recover the liturgical functionality of the articulated Christs, such as the Holy Christ of Burgos, during the acts of Good Friday.

It was a tradition at the time for the figures to be removed from the crosses, venerated by the citizens and then taken out in procession. The artistic and patrimonial value of the Santo Cristo de Burgos, a 16th century Gothic image, has so far prevented this tradition from being carried out.
