Processional Monstrance of the Cathedral of Burgos, a jewel of the goldsmith's art.

One of the great treasures of the Cathedral of Burgos is the processional monstrance made by GRANDA (1927). A great work of gold work that has been part of exhibitions of sacred art for its quality, richness and aesthetics.

It is a processional monstrance of gold, gilded silver, ivory, enamels and precious stones that is placed on the silver float in the Corpus Christi procession.

It is necessary to distinguish in this great work three main partsThe Custody itself, the pedestal on which it rests and the five-sided folding board that protects it, these last parts are the ones that make up the so-called exhibitor.

The Custody represents the tree of life. Its symbolism is inspired by chapter XXIII of the Apocalypse. It has a great diversity of allegorical figures, with a crown of emeralds and precious stones. The virile is platinum, and appears in the center, adoring him, groups of angels in ivory and saints in their ogival niches on the sides.

At the foot of the monstrance, eight medallions represent the struggle for life in the different elements, the struggle with passions, etc.

In the coronation it has a magnificent constellated cross, also with rhinestones.

The base, with eight turtlessymbolizes the earth on which the Monstrance rests. It is made of fire-gilded silver. Its upper half affects the rectangular shape, with eight small boards on its faces, which are represent biblical passagescarved in ivory.

The lower one is made up of four groups of angels with garlands alternating with other figures with shields.

The five front panels offer a great decorative richness. All of them have an infinity of figures and ornaments, in silver and ivory, being their main symbolizations the Immaculate, the Redemption, the Coronation of the Virgin, the Assumption and the Glorified Christ.

The magnificent jewel is located in the Cathedral Museum of the Burgos Cathedral(Plaza de Santa María, s/n - 09003 BURGOS. Tel: 947 20 47 12. E-mail: info@catedraldeburgos.es)
