GRANDA reconstructs the main altarpiece of Our Lady of the Virgin of Pilar in Santiago de Compostela.

Granda has carried out the reconstruction of the missing High Altarpiece of the Church of Our Lady of the Virgin of Pilar of Santiago de CompostelaThe liturgical needs demanded by the people of that town.

The original altarpiecean altarpiece 18th century baroqueby Miguel de RomayIt was dismantled in the 19th century as a result of floods that occurred in the church and deposited, in pieces, in the churches of Santa Susana and San Domingo de Bonaval.

The pieces that were taken to the church of Santa Susana The pieces deposited in San Domingo de Bonaval gradually disappeared, as the convent was under construction for many years and some of them were burned to provide heat to the construction workers, while others simply disappeared. Most of the missing pieces belonged to its structure.

Some of the pieces preserved were randomly exposed in the presbytery of the parish of El Pilar, contributing to the false history and interior visual contamination, centralizing the focus of attention in a small carving of the Immaculate VirginThe image of the temple's patron saint was left aside.

Performance criteria

The intervention has tried to be easily recognizable so that it does not constitute a historical, aesthetic or architectural faux pas that would affect the image of the preserved pieces. Sizes of La Virgen del Pilar, San Juan Bautista and San Pedro have returned to their places of origin. The relief that used to decorate the central street of the attic has been replaced by a carving of St. James the Apostle belonging to the Church of El Pilar; in the space occupied by the carving of the Saint Raymond Nonnatuson the right side street of the central body, there is a carving of Santa Susana that is preserved in the presbytery of the church of Pilar; and in place of the small Sacred Heart carvingwhich was located to the left of the Virgin of the Pilar, in the central body, has been arranged a carving of St. Anthony preserved in Santa Susana.

The justification for these changes is based on the fact that the original carvings were not preserved, and for the outstanding dedication that the faithful who visit the temple have for these saints.

In addition, the central niche of the original altarpiece, which was inserted in the main altarpiece of Santa Susana, has been recovered and returned to its place of origin, looking for another more coherent solution to take its place in the altarpiece of Santa Susana.
