Gómez Mata Family Mausoleum

Granda has been in charge of making, in its art workshops in Madrid, the mausoleum of the Gómez-Mata family located in the municipal cemetery of Vila-real (Castellón).

It is a monument of almost five meters highpresided over by a resurrected Christ. Both the image of Jesus Christ and the rest of the sculptures are made of Carrara marble. Travertine marble has been used for the pedestals, recalling the foundations of Holy Mother Church and the blood of the martyrs on the ancient stone of Rome.

Located in a plot of 64 m2s, in the central part of the cemetery, this mausoleum has a crypt of 30m2 and four meters deep, three floors in height for six niches and three columbaria. The work commissioned to Talleres de Arte Granda, has been made in travertine and Carrara marble. It stands out for its dimensions and its sculptural beauty.

With a highly symbolic in which faith and eternal life The mausoleum of the Gómez Mata family shows the Resurrected Christ, 2.30 meters high and characterized by the three powers, which allude to the Holy Trinity. This is located in the central and highest part of the monument.

The central sculpture is flanked at a lower level by four angels of approximately one and a half meters in size. They represent, through different symbolic elements, the triumph over death and the meeting of the soul with God. One faces the visitor and claims his attention; another shows the way with his gaze to Christ; the third crowns the tomb as a pledge of the ultimate prize and the last one shows a dove in an attitude of freedom. On the reverse, a relief of the Immaculate Conception in white marble completes this work, directed by Juan Antonio Medina and elaborated by a group of stone artisans from Granda..

The sculptural ensemble has been designed and coordinated by Pascual Mata and Javier Lahuertamembers of Format Arquitectos Arquitectos, a studio based in Vila-real.

"It is a contribution to the religious cultural heritage of Vila-real," said the mayor of Vila-Real.

Many contributions have been made by the businessman José Gómez Mata has made for the benefit of society in general and in particular of Vila-real. The artistic ensemble of the square and monument to San Pascual, the bell towers of the basilica, the carillon and the set of bells, along with the hydraulic elevator of the basilica, are the main works of his legacy to his fellow citizens.
