Replicated of the Holy Christ of the Cathedral of Burgos
FEATURED WORKS | burgos-spain
of this replica lies in the recovery of the liturgical functionality of this image of Christs, such as that of the original Christ of Burgos, a priceless Gothic image of the 14th-century with an artistic and patrimonial value that prevented liturgical practices from being carried out for fear of damages. Traditionally, that image of Christ could be unnailed from the cross to be venerated by the Faithful and taken through the streets in procession. To prepare for this special project, we performed a thorough study, analyzing materials through X-rays and executing a clinical analysis of the polychromies. To create the replica itself, we resorted to new technologies for help, making sure we would respect the nature of the elements used in the original. The original piece is made of cedar wood, carved into fragments (head, torso, arms, and legs), which were later assembled, allowing for mobility in the joints. The filling is made of synthetic fiber. It was lined with leather to give a feeling of realism, just as the original image of Christ treasured in the Cathedral. The carving preserves details such as the drops of blood, which were made with plaster, the nails and natural hair. Financing: Cathedral of Burgos. Execution: Talleres de Arte GRANDA S.A.
