is the most important center of the Korean Catholics in California, and our client was looking for a project in which inculturation was crucial, that is, the expression of the dogmas and principles of the Catholic Faith in the way of artistic forms and traditions of a given ethnic group, in this case, the Korean. With this idea as a guideline, a design of great simplicity of lines was proposed, in accordance with the architecture of the church building. This approach established a dialog between the geometric forms of the circle and square, traditional symbols of the spiritual or divine and the material world, respectively. Dominant lines create a contrast between different materials among which wood and marble stand out. The sculptures, carved in wood and polychrome by means of glazes, in which both the crucified Christ and the Virgin with the Child have Korean features, are especially representative of the inculturation that governs the project.
