This monumental
Basilica church with its spacious interior required a prominent element in the sanctuary that would both stand out yet also complement the surrounding classical architecture. The great altarpiece, in an eclectic style, contains polychrome reliefs in vivid colors, representing the iconographic cycle of the life of Christ. The colorful images are set against the impressive, fully gilded masonry background that commingles glossy and matte finishes. The emblem of the Basilica is the main element of the ensemble, set in the center of the altarpiece with a life-size crucifix above. Additional two lateral altarpieces, installed to the side of the sanctuary follow the style of the central altarpiece. They house round sculptures, made in the estofado technique, dedicated to Saint Theodore and Saint Constance, in reference to the donors.
