Water gilded carved wood, in polychrome distemper and stew technique
Chapel of the Immaculate Conception, Concepción County, Guatemala
Wood carving of the Immaculate Conception, which follows a well-known model by the famous Baroque artist Alonso Cano. The statue made by Granda has been water gilded and uses the estofado technique to complete its finish. The mantle features Marian symbols taken from the Litany of Loreto, such as Mirror of Justice, Throne of Wisdom, and Mystic Rose. The edge of the mantle contains an inscription with the ejaculatory prayer “Oh Mary, Conceived Without Sin, Pray for Us Who Have Recourse to Thee”.
