The Mongomo Basilica

is the largest religious building in Central Africa and its classically inspired architecture creates a lively contrast with the exuberant and tropical site of the building. Layout of the impressive piazza in front the church replicates the great square of the Basilica of St. Peter in the Vatican. The piazza is paved with Roman travertine marble that visually merges with the extensive colonnade. The scenes of the Mysteries of the Holy Rosary, commissioned specifically for the exterior of this church, are installed in this area, shaded by the colonnade. The scenes, inspired by the style and craftsmanship of the Renaissance ceramic artworks, are hand painted on tile. Their frames echo the architectural details of the Basilica church such as marble arches and Tuscan columns. Rest benches that are part of the design are also included as part of the visit to the Via Rosarium.
